Hackfest Generation 2024
Activities to familiarize the new generation with cybersecurity. The content is aimed at 12-17 year olds, but we’re not too demanding.
All activities are designed in an unstructured way to allow participants to focus on their interests and learn new skills. We’ll have experienced safety professionals on hand who can push participants out of their comfort zones or guide them in how to solve problems.
It’ll be cool, fun and quite challenging! Guaranteed.
We also organize competitions in the cookhouse so that participants can compete against each other.
Participation in other villages and conferences is also encouraged.
Registration
Rules
The rule that governs all rules is: This is not a daycare center…
Hackfest Generation is an activity to introduce young people to hacking. It’s not a daycare center where you can leave your kids during the conference or CTF.
Here are a few rules to follow:
- Minors must be accompanied by an adult.
- We don’t tolerate anything illegal.
- The Hackfest code of conduct must be respected.
- Hackfest infrastructure is not a target.
- Please respect volunteers and other participants.
- An emergency number must be left with the HF Generation managers.
Activities to be prepared
Each track has several levels of difficulty. We encourage participants to do them in order, but it’s up to them… We won’t judge if they find a challenge too easy :P
3D printing:
We’ll have one or more printers on site for them to experiment with 3D printing. Challenges range from understanding the concept, software and language to printing simple and complex parts.
Introduction to coding:
Activities will range from implementing algorithms using visual languages (such as Scratch, etc.) to actual coding. Like last year, we’ll also have a contest using the logo language to generate the logo for next year’s Hackfest generation.
Introduction to game security:
Games can take many forms. From digital to paper. This course focuses on the various aspects of game development, from designing the rules to breaking them. You never know, we might have our first game of the Hackfest generation this year.
Introduction to hacking
Participants will be able to experiment with hacking by trying their hand at a few challenges from the OWASP Juice Shop.
Basic CTF :
Attendees are also encouraged to participate in the Hackfest Basic CTF to test their skills and learn new ones. We’ll have people on hand to guide them… And no, there’s no way to social-engineer your way to answers… only advice will be given.
More information to come
There are also a bunch of other activities in the pressure cooker that won’t be announced here as we’re still assessing their suitability, but if you think your child is gifted, we’ll make sure to keep them occupied while you attend the conferences.
