The theme: Go

Go is played on a 19 by 19 board, and 2027 is the 19th Hackfest. Our mark brings three ideas together.

  • The 19×19 board

A standard Go board has 19 lines, and this is the 19th Hackfest. The grid corner, with coordinates 15 to 19, reads as both the board and edition 19.

  • The glider

The five HF stones sit on line intersections, as in real Go, and form the glider from Conway's Game of Life, the long-standing hacker emblem. Four stones are already on the board.

  • The last stone

A robot hand holds the stone like a Go player, between index and middle finger, and places it on line 19 to complete the glider. It is the moment a hack comes together: the strategy of Go, the emergence of Life and the precision of the machine.

The glider, the hacker emblem

Five stones, a few simple rules, and the pattern starts moving on its own. It is the glider from the Game of Life, adopted as an emblem by the hacker community in 2003. It sums up what we do at Hackfest: understand the rules of a system, then find the behaviour nobody planned for. Like an exploit chain, or an AI that surprises the people who built it.
